“As for the Hour, there is no doubt concerning it”

Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that after completing the farewell pilgrimage, in the 10th year of Hijrah, the Holy Prophet stood before the door of the Kaaba, and held on to its latch, and said to his companions:

"Ought I not inform you of the signs of the Hour (Day of Resurrection)?

Salman al-Farsi who was the nearest of all those present replied,

"Surely, O Messenger of Allah."

The Holy Prophet said,

"Verily, amongst the Signs of the Hour is, “Neglecting of prayer, following ones desires, leaning towards one’s vagaries, exalting the wealthy, and selling one’s religion for worldly benefit. At that time the heart and soul of the believer will melt (from grief) as salt melts in water, from observing unlawful (acts), yet unable to change them.”

Salman asked, "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah?"

The Prophet replied, "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time, rulers will be tyrants, ministers will be transgressors, the scholars oppressors and the trustees betrayers."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, verily at that time evil will become virtue, and virtue will become evil. The betrayer will be trusted, and the trustworthy will be thought devious. The prevaricators will be endorsed, and the veracious will be considered liars."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time women will rule and bondwomen will be consulted. Boys will sit upon the pulpit (mimbar), Lying will be considered cleverness, and alms giving (zakat) will be considered a loss. The war booty will be squandered as personal property, and man will be harsh with his parents, (yet) kind to his companions, and at that time tailed comets will appear”.

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time the woman will become a partner of her husband in trade, and the rain will be extremely hot. Noble people will remain sorrowful and the poor person will be looked down upon. At that time, the markets will come nearer and they will say, ‘I did not sell anything’ and, ‘ I did not gain any profit.’ Thus, you will see nothing save the disparaging of Allah."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, and then it will happen that they will be governed by such people that if they talked, they would kill them, and if they remained silent, they would confiscate their wealth, Their sanctity will be trampled on and their blood shed. People’s hearts will be filled with fear, and you will not find anyone but that he would be afraid, fearful, terrified and apprehensive."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, verily at that time some things will be brought from the East and some things from the West, and my Nation (Ummah) will be dyed in them. Woe unto the weaker individuals of my Ummah, and woe unto them from Allah, for they will not be merciful towards the young, nor will they respect the old. They will not abstain from wickedness. Their bodies will be that of human beings, and their hearts that of devils.

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"Oh Salman, at that time men will be content with men, and women with women. And enthusiasm will be shown for the boys as it is shown for the girls in their family’s home! Men will resemble women and women will resemble men. Women will ride on saddles, and the curse of Allah will be sent upon them.”

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time mosques will be decorated in the same manner as the temples and churches of the Christians and the Jews are decorated, The Quran will also be decorated. The Minarets will be elongated and the people praying will exceed in number with people whose hearts are filled with enmity and those whose tongues differ”.

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"Oh Salman, at that time the males of my nation will adorn themselves with gold, dress themselves in silken brocades and make clothes out of leopard (panther/tiger) skins”.

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, and at that time usury will be manifest and they will trade utilizing backbiting and bribe. The religion will be degraded and the world elevated."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time there will be an increase in divorce and punishment according to Allah’s laws will not be administered, But not the least harm will they do to Allah.”

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied, "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time women vocalists and musical instruments will appear, and the wicked of my nation will follow them."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied, "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time the wealthy people in my nation will do the pilgrimage for leisure, and the middle class will go to trade, and the poor will go as show and for repute. At that time there will be people who will learn the Quran for other than Allah, and they will adopt it (the Quran) as an instrument of music. There will be people who will attain religious knowledge for other than Allah. The number of illegitimate children will increase, and the Quran will be recited melodiously. People will race each other over the worldly material."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied, "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, this will happen when sanctities are violated, sins are common and the wicked are given authority over the virtuous. And when Lies become plentiful; obstinacy (disputes) will be carried out in the open and people pride themselves on that which they wear and there is unseasonable rain; and gambling and musical instruments will be approved of and enjoining good and forbidding evil will be disapproved of, so much so that the faithful at that time will be considered the most abject from amongst the people of the nation. The reciters and worshipers will openly reproach other, and they will be called filthy and unclean in the Kingdom (of the heavens).”

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"O’ Salman, at that time, the wealthy will not fear anyone save the poor, so much so that a beggar will continue begging between two Fridays and will not find anyone to put anything in his hands."

Salman asked: "Will this be existent O Messenger of Allah? "

He replied: "Yes, By He who holds my life in His Hands.”

"Oh Salman, at that time the ‘Ruwaibadhah’ will talk."

Salman asked:

"And what is ‘Ruwaibadhah’? O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be a sacrifice for you."

Holy Prophet said,

"Such persons who will talk about public affairs who had not talked about such matter before. Then shortly after, chaos will appear upon the earth, and every nation will think that chaos was only present in their part of the land.

"They will tarry in that condition as long as Allah wishes them to remain. Then the Earth will throw out the pieces of its heart - gold, silver, and other minerals –

The Holy Prophet then pointed towards the pillars, and said,

"Similar to these in size, but on that day neither gold nor silver will be of any benefit to anyone. And this is the meaning of the words of Allah, “The Signs thereof have already come.”
