FATIMA

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

“Surely We have given you abundance

So pray to your Lord and sacrifice

Surely your enemy is the one who shall

  Be without posterity”

BIRTH

The above verse was revealed in honour of Fatima Al-Zahra also known by the name of al-Kauthar because of the abundance that came from her.

Fatima was born to Sayyida Khadija who was a deeply religious and pure lady.  Khadija was the first wife of Prophet Mohammad and the first woman to accept Islam.  She was such a faithful woman that she gave all of her wealth to her husband, Prophet Mohammad, in order that he has financial security in the spreading of the Message.

Before her marriage to Prophet Mohammad she was very much respected amongst the people of Quraysh, so much so,  that they used to call her “The Chaste”.

Prophet Mohammad was the father of Fatima and he was the seal of Prophets.  He was born into a very dignified and noble family.  From the moment he was born he shunned the idol worshippers of Quraysh.  He also stood out amongst the youth of his time because of his honesty, trustworthiness and excellent manners.  Prophet Mohammad was known to Quraysh as the “Truthful" and the “Trustworthy”.  Therefore Fatima was born to parents who were, “Chaste, truthful and trustworthy”.

Fatima was born in the holy city of Mecca on the twentieth Jamadi Thani.

Fatima al-Zahra was conceived from fruits that came from paradise.  Imam al-Redha said that the Prophet said, “On the night of my ascension to heaven, Jibrael took my hand and lead me into Paradise, then he handed me dates from which I ate; those dates were formed into sperm.  When I descended to Earth, I came unto Khadija who became pregnant with Fatima…”

Khadija’s pregnancy went well, even though the women of Quraysh were not talking to her and ignoring her because of her choice of husband. Nevertheless Allah the Merciful does not forsake his faithful subjects, so in order to fill the void left by the boycott placed on her by the Qurayshi women Allah gave Fatima the power of speech from within the womb of her mother. Khadija said, “One day the Prophet entered the house and found me speaking to someone.  He asked me as to whom I’m speaking to.  I replied that surely that, which is in my womb, surely it speaks to me”.  The Prophet then said, “Rejoice Khadija, for this is the girl whom Allah has made to be the mother of eleven of my successors who will come after me and after their father.”

When it came time to give birth to Fatima, Khadija sent for some Qurayshan midwives to help her deliver.  The midwives refused and said, “We will not help deliver your baby because your husband is Mohammad.”

But again Allah wasn’t going to  let Khadija suffer alone, so He sent four women to Khadija’s house.  Their beauty and brilliance cannot be described.  They had come to help Lady Khadija.

The first lady said, “I am your mother Eve.”

The second one said, “I am Asiya bint Muzahim.”

The third one said, “I am Kaltham, Prophet Musa’s sister.”

The fourth one said, “I am Mariam bint Imran, Isa’s mother and we have come to help deliver your child.”

Fatima was then born.  Once Fatima was born Lady Khadija nursed her herself and did not give her to a wet-nurse as was the tradition.

Her names

Fatima was known by nine different names of which FATIMA was the most special.  Her names are:

1)      FATIMA:  Imam  al-Sadiq quoting his father said, “The Messenger           of Allah said: O Fatima, do you know why you have been given the name Fatima?”.  Imam Ali Said: Why was she named Fatima?”.  The Prophet replied: Because she and her followers (Shiites) are protected from the fires of hell.”

2)      ZAHRA:  She is called al-Zahra because as Ibn Abbas narrates that the Prophet of Allah said: “Surely my daughter Fatima is the Mistress of all women from the beginning to the end.  She is part of me, and the light my eyes.  She is the flower of my heart, and is my soul.  Fatima is a human huri, who whenever she stands in prayers in the presence of her Lord (Exalted is his name), her light illuminates the skies for the angels, like stars shine to people on Earth.”

3)       TAHIRA:  She is al-Tahira because Allah revealed in the Quran the  “Ayah of Purification”,  “And Allah only wished to remove all abomination from you, oh members of the family, and to make you pure and spotless.”(33:33)

4)       MARDHIYA:  She achieved this name and rank through her good deeds that pleased Allah and made him well satisfied with her. “Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him)

5)      SIDDIQA:  The Arabic word ‘sidq’ means truth.  Fatima was al-sidiqqa because she was a truth-teller.  She never lied.  Her deeds comformed to her words.  She never lied because she was used to truthfulness.  She believed in the commands of Allah and his Prophet, without doubting at all.

6)      BATOOL:  Fatima was purified in the verse of purification, (33:33).  This meant that she was not only pure from sins but she was also cleansed from impurities like childbirth bleeding and menstruation.  It is narrated that Asma bint Umais said:  “When Fatima gave birth to al-Hassan, she did not bleed.  She also does not have menstruation bleeds.  When I informed the Prophet of Allah of this, he said:  Don’t  you know that my daughter is chaste.  She does not discharge blood as a result of childbirth or menstruation.”

7)      ZAKIYA:  Fatima was pure and free from all sins so for that reason she is called al-Zakiya.

8)      ATHRA’A:  She was named al-Adra’a because Fatima never lost her virginity.  The Prophet said, My daughter Fatima is a female huri.”

Explaining this Imam al-Sadiq said, “Because (huris) are created from pure goodness where no bligh can alter them, nor does senility inflict them…menstruation does not pollute them.”

9)      MUBARAKAH:  She was named al-Mubarakah because abundant blessings came from her.  The most important was the blessing of eleven Imams whom she is the mother of.

FATIMA IN SURAT AL-INSAN

To have a verse revealed in the Quran in your honour is one of the greatest privileges. Fatima not only had a verse revealed in her honour, she had a full chapter.  That Chapter is called “al-Insan" or “al-Dahr”, and it consists of thirty-one verses.  In those thirty-one verses, Allah never mentions the huris as a form of respect for Fatima.

Ibn Abbas said;  “Once al-Hassan and al-Hussain were ill, the Messenger of Allah and a group went to visit them. The visitors suggested to Imam Ali to make a vow to Allah, if he were to relieve them (he would perform a good action).  Therefore, Imam Ali together with Fatima and their servant Fidha vowed to Allah that they would fast for three days if  He would relieve al-Hassan and al-Hussain.

When Allah had relieved them Imam Ali borrowed three cubic measures of barley (aswu) from a Jew known as Shimon.  Fatima ground one part of the barley (sa’a) of the barley and baked five loaves of bread for her family’s meal at sunset.  As sunset approached, a needy man knocked on the door and said: ‘Peace be upon you Family of Mohammad.  I am a needy man from among the Muslims, feed me may Allah feed you from the food of Paradise.’  The holy family preferred the needy man to themselves and spent the night with nothing in their stomachs except water.

They fasted the second day, and again at sunset; when they were awaiting their food, an orphan asked them for help and they again preferred him to themselves.  The third evening a prisoner of war asked them for help and they again donated their food for this person in need.

The following morning Imam Ali took al-Hassan and al-Hussain to the Messenger of Allah who when he saw them shaking like little chicks from hunger said, ‘It displeases us to see you in this condition.’

Then he went with them, for he wanted to see Fatima.  When they arrived Fatima was in the praying niche (mehrab) and her condition was such that it further displeased the Prophet.  At this time Jibrael descended and said: ‘Take this chapter Mohammad; Allah surely congratulates you for having this family.”

This is the Chapter revealed in honour of Fatima and her family and as a reward from Allah for their charity:

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

1         There surely came over man a period of time when he was a thing not worth mentioning.

2         Surely we have created man from a small life-germ uniting (itself): We mean to try him, so We have made him hearing, seeing.

3         Surely We have shown him the way: he may be thankful or unthankful.

4         Surely We have prepared for the unbelievers chains and shackles and a burning fire.

5         Surely the righteous shall drink of a cup the admixture of which is camphor,

6         A fountain from which the servants of Allah shall drink; they make it to flow a (goodly) flowing forth.

7         They fulfill vows and fear a day the evil of which shall be spreading far and wide.

8         And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive:

9         We only feed you for Allah’s sake; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks:

10    Surely we fear from our Lord a stern, distressful day.

11    Therefore Allah will guard them from the evil of that day and cause them to meet with ease and happiness;

12    And reward them, because they were patient, with garden and silk,

13    Reclining therein on raised couches, they shall find therein neither (the severe heat of) the sun nor intense cold.

14    And close down upon them (shall be) its shadows, and its fruits shall be made near (to them), being easy to reach.

15    And there shall be made to go round about them vessels of silver and goblets which are of glass,

16    (Transparent as) glass, made of silver they have measured them according to a measure.

17    And they shall be made to drink therein a cup the admixture of which shall be ginger.

18    (Of) a fountain therein which is named Salsabil.

19    And round about them shall go youths never altering in age; when you see them you will think them to be scattered pearls.

20    And when you see there, you shall see blessings and a great kingdom.

21    Upon them shall be garments of fine green silk and thick silk interwoven with gold, and they shall be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord shall make them drink a pure drink.

22    Surely this is a reward for you, and your striving shall be recompensed

23    Surely We ourselves have revealed the Quran to you, revealing (it) in portions.

24    Therefore wait patiently for the command of your Lord, and obey not from among them a sinner or an ungrateful one.

25    And glorify the name of your Lord morning and evening.

26    And during part of the night adore Him, and give glory to Him (a) long (part of the) night.

27    Surely these love the transitory and neglect a grievous day before them.

28    We created them and made firm their make, and when we please we will bring in their place the likes of them by a change.

29    Surely this is a reminder, so whoever pleases takes to his Lord a way.

30    And you do not please except that Allah pleas; surely Allah is Knowing, Wise;

31    He makes whom He pleases to enter into His mercy; and) as for) the unjust, He has prepared for them a painful chastisement.

THE PROPHET AND FATIMA

The Messenger of Allah on many occasions showed the people the importance of Fatima and that she was to be respected and that she was not any ordinary woman.  She was in fact the Mistress of All Women. For example after the verse of purification was revealed in honour of his Ahlul Bayt, for six months, he would pass by Fatima's house and say:

"And Allah only wished to remove all abomination from you Ahlul Bayt and to make you pure and spotless."  On other occasions he would stand up when she arrived, kiss her hand then sit her in the position he was sitting.  The Prophet would always say statements that were in her honour, amongst those traditions are:

The Messenger of Allah said to Fatima while holding her hand,  "He who knows her, knows her, and he who does not know her; she is a part of me, she is my heart and my spirit which is in my side, thus he who harms her harms me."

He also said, "Fatima is part of me. Whomsoever harms her, harms me and whomsoever harms me harms Allah and whomsoever harms Allah, Allah will throw him into hell."

To acquaint the Muslims with Fatima and her high rank, Prophet Mohammad said, "The best women of paradise are Khadija daughter of Kuwailid, Fatima daughter of Mohammad, Mariam Daughter of Imram (Mother of Isa) and Asiya daughter of Muzahim, the wife of Firaun (pharaoh).

FATIMA’S  SUPPLICATIONS

Fatima spent many hours glorifying her Lord.  She also spent many hours asking Allah to grant the needs of the believers.  She has many supplications of which the most known to us would be ‘Dua’al-Noor’.

Salman Al-Farsi narrates: ten days after the Prophet's death I went out of my house and on the way I saw Imam Ali who said to me, "Salman have you deserted us after the Prophet's departure". I said to him, "My beloved Abul Hassan, I can never desert you, but my grieving for the Prophet has kept me from visiting you.  He then said to me, "Salman go and visit Fatima for she misses you.  She also wants to give you a gift from heaven that was given to her.

Salman continues; I rushed to Fatima's house and when I was given permission to enter I saw Fatima sitting.  She said to me, "have you deserted us?".    I said, "how can I desert you?".  She said, "Sit down and listen to what I say.  I was sitting yesterday thinking about how, after my father's departure from this world, revelation along with the angels suddenly stopped descending to this house.  Suddenly the door opened and three ladies whose perfume and beauty was bewildering entered.  I stood up and said to them, 'are you from Mecca or Medina?'.  They said, 'O daughter of Mohammad we are not from Medina, Mecca or even from Earth.  We are huris sent by our Lord to you because we miss you dearly.'

I said to the first one whom I assumed was the eldest, 'what is your name?'.  She said, 'Maqdooda".  I said, 'why have you been given that name?  She replied, 'because I was specifically created for al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad, the Prophet's companion.'

I asked the second one, 'what is your name?'  She replied, I am Dhara, and I have been created for Abu Dhar the companion of the Prophet.  The third one said her name was Salma, and she was created for Salman al-Farsi, your father's companion.   They then gave me dates that smelled sweeter than musk, and were whiter than snow.  They were not like any dates I had ever seen before.

Fatima then gave me some of those dates and said that I should break my fast with them and come back to her tomorrow with the seeds.

I took the dates, and whenever I passed any of the Prophets companions they asked me if I was carrying musk with me.  When it was time, I broke my fast, and found to my amazement that the dates did not contain any seeds.  The next day I went back to her and told her that I had broken my fast with the dates that she had gifted me and that I did not find any seeds.  She said, 'O Salman and there will never be any seeds in them because they are from palms that Allah had planted in Dar al-Salam in honour of some words that were taught to me by my father which I recited every evening.

I said, 'please teach me those words'.  She then said, 'If you wish to avoid being inflicted with fever whilst you are in this world, then you should regularly recite these words.

Salman then said that she taught me these preventative words. They are:

“In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Light.  In the name of Allah, the Light of Light.  In the name of Allah who is Light above Light.  In the name of Allah, who directs and controls all affairs.  In the name of Allah, who created light from Light.  All praise is due to Allah who created light from Light.  And sent down light on Tur, mentioned in the broad leaves of the guarded tablet, and on Him.  All praise is due to Allah, who is spoken of with respect and who is famous for His Honour.  And who deserves thanks both in happiness and sorrow.

And may Allah bless our Leader Mohammad and all his holy descendants.”

Some of her other supplications are:

“O Allah! Belittle me in my eyes and glorify and magnify Your status to me.  And inspire me to be obedient to You.  And inspire me with deeds that receive your satisfaction. And aid me in evading and shunning deeds and actions that bring your wrath.”

“O Allah!  Make me content with what you have bestowed upon me.  And till the end of time conceal my transgressions and protect me from further transgressions.  Forgive me and take mercy upon me when I die.  O Allah do not make me labour for that you have not preordained for me, and facilitate all things that you have predestined for me."

"O Allah reward my parents and all those who have been beneficent to me with the best of your rewards.  O Allah occupy me with that which you have created me for.  And do not engross me with my own commitments.  And do not torment me whilst I am asking forgiveness of you and do not deprive me when I ask of you."

FATIMA'S HIGH STANDARDS

Fatima al-Zahra had knowledge and morals that were the same as her fathers.  With regards to her knowledge, it is related that she possessed a book that contained in it a vast amount of her knowledge.  That book is called 'Mashaf Fatima', and it was passed from one Imam to another.  It is now in the possession of Al-Mahdi.

Fatima did not only gather knowledge for her ownself.  She also lectured others with this knowledge that was from the Prophet.  In fact, she persevered very hard to spread this knowledge.  One of those taught by her was Fiddha, her maid.  This lady for the last twenty years of her life only spoke and answered people with verses from the Quran.

It is narrated that a lady came and asked Fatima a question.  Fatima answered her.  The lady continued to ask until her questions reached ten.  After that the lady felt embarrassed about asking more.  She said, 'I won't overburden you with more questions, Oh daughter of the Prophet.'  Fatima answered saying, 'Ask anything you wish for I heard my father say that the scholars from my people will on the day of Judgement be bestowed with honours depending on the amount of knowledge they possess and how much strain they exert in teaching the people.'

Besides the sea of knowledge that Fatima possessed, there was her extraordinary worship of Allah.  Fatima would pray until her legs swelled from standing.  She always prayed for the believers before praying for herself.  In describing her worship Imam Hassan said, "I saw my mother, Fatima, standing in her prayer niche.  She kept praying, bending and prostrating until day break.  I heard her pray for the male and female believers, mentioning them by name.  She prayed so much for them, but didn't pray for herself.  'Mother', I asked her, 'why don't you pray for yourself as you are praying for others?' 'My little son', she said, 'begin with your neighbour then yourself.'

Fatima also helped further the cause of Islam on the battlefield against the infidels.  She would clean the wounds of her father, and when she was not needed, she would take full responsibility of the household in order that her husband can continue to defend Islam.

Fatima had very high standards.  She was the perfect daughter, wife and mother.  As a daughter she endured many hardships with her father at the beginning of his mission.  She also helped clean him up on many occasions from the dirt the infidels threw on him.  She cared for him so much that he called her 'the mother of her father', meaning that she cared for him in the same manner that mothers do to their sons.

When Fatima was married, she had a very simple lifestyle.  Fatima did all the housework and did not have a servant.  She would grind her own wheat and clean the house.  The Prophet and Imam Ali would help her when they were not busy.  She worked so hard that one-day the Prophet cried when he saw her grinding at the handmill.  He said to her, 'Fatima put up with the bitterness of this world today so as to bask in the comfort of the next world tomorrow.  Fatima replied, 'Praise be to Allah for his favours, and thanks for His bounties.'

As a mother, she cared for and brought up her children to be as she was, patient, generous and forgiving, plus defenders of Islam.  Fatima while being a daughter, wife and mother always had sound morals and always looked after her hijab and never had idol talks with foreign men.  The Prophet one day asked in the Mosque what was the best thing for a woman.  Imam Ali came to her house and asked Fatima the same.  She replied that the best thing is that the woman does not see any foreign men or that she allows any foreign men to see her.  Imam Ali went back to the Mosque and gave that answer to the Prophet.  When the Prophet heard the answer that had come from Fatima he said, 'May her father be a sacrifice for her.  Naturally that is quite correct, she is after all a part of my own being.'

There is also the story of the blind man that came with the Prophet to Fatima's house.  When they came to her house, she went to get her hijab.

The prophet said, 'Fatima he is blind'.  She said, 'Yes father he may not see me but I can see him.'

DEATH

After the Prophets death, Imam Ali was deprived of the caliphate.  He was also subjected to oppression by the first two caliphs because he wouldn't pay allegiance.  It was important that they get allegiance from Imam Ali, so Omar went to Fatima's house and said, "Come out and pay allegiance to Abu Bakr".  Imam Ali refused saying that he was busy putting the Quran together.  When Ali refused to come out, Omar ordered that the door of the house be burnt and forcibly opened.  Fatima who was without hijab ran behind the door to protect herself.  Omar pushed open the door, and when he realised that Fatima was behind it he pushed it harder squashing her between the door and the wall.  This broke her rib and caused her to miscarry the baby she was pregnant with.

These injuries caused her to become very sick and in the end was the cause of her death.

Fatima told Imam Ali before she died that she wanted to be buried at night so that those people who oppressed her don't walk behind her coffin.  Imam Ali buried her at night then stood up, turned his face towards the Prophet's grave and said: "Oh Messenger of God!  I offer salutations to you on my own behalf and on you daughter's.  She has come to be your neighbour.  She will be resting in you vicinity under the dust.  The Almighty Allah has arranged a quick reunion betweem you both.  O Messenger of Allah!  I have lost patience because of separation from your beloved daughter.  I put up with the shock of being separated from you.  I repeat the same attitude now with this new separation.  I laid you to sleep in your grave.  The separation of your soul from your body came about when your body was resting between my chest and neck.  The command of the Holy Quran suffices me: 'Verily we are Allah's and verily unto him is our return.'

Fatima al-Zahra breathed her last breath on the 3rd Jamadi al-Thani.

DAY OF JUDGEMENT

On the Day of Judgement Allah will show to All the people the great honour in which Fatima is held.  He will allow her to intercede for her followers and those who love her.  She because of that honour can ask forgiveness for them, thus allowing her to proceed with them into paradise.  It is narrated by Jabir al-Ansari that on that day after the Prophet and the Imams deliver their speeches, Jibrael will call out, 'Where is Fatima the daughter of Mohammad.'  Fatima then rises.  Allah then says, 'Oh People of the gathering, to whom does honour belong today?'  "So Mohammad, Ali, Hassan and Al-Hussain will say: 'To Allah, The One, and The Almighty."  Allah the Exalted will say: "O People of the gathering: lower your heads and cast your eyes down, for this is Fatima proceeding towards paradise.  Jibrael shall then bring her a female camel from the female camels of Paradise; its sides shall be embellished, its muzzle with fresh pearls, and it shall have a saddle of coral.  It shall kneel down in her presence; so she will ride it.  Allah will then send one hundred thousand angels to accompany her on her right side; and one hundred thousand angels to accompany her on he left side; and one hundred thousand angels to lift her onto their wings until they bring her to the gate of Paradise.  When she is near the gate of Paradise, she will look to her side."  Allah will then say: "Daughter of my beloved, why did you look to your side after I gave the command that you enter My Paradise?'  She will say:  "My lord, I wished that my position would be realised on such a day!"  Allah will say, "Daughter of my beloved!  Go back and look for everyone in whose heart was love for you or for any of your progeny; take their hand and lead them into paradise!"

Imam al-Baqir said, "By Allah Jabir, she will pick her Shiites (followers) and those who love her, just like a bird picks good seeds from bad seeds.  So that when her Shiites are near the gate of Paradise, Allah will inspire their hearts to look to their sides; when they do, Allah the Almighty, will say: My beloved one, why did you look around when Fatima, the daughter of my beloved one, interceded for you.   They will answer Our Lord!  We hoped that our position would be known on such a day!

"Allah will then say: My beloved ones go back and look for everyone who loved you for your love for Fatima.  Look for everyone who fed you for the love of Fatima.  Look for everyone that clothed you for the love of Fatima.  Look for everyone who gave you a drink for the love of Fatima.  Look for everyone who prevented backbiting from being done against you for the love of Fatima…. Take their hands and lead them into Paradise…"

Ziyarat fatima

There are many visitations (Ziyarat) for Fatima, but the one we have chosen is one that has been proven to give relief from hardships.  Many have cited that after reading this ziyarah, their problems were solved by the will of Allah of course:

Peace be upon you who were tried; Allah who created you tried you before he created your (flesh); He found you patient with that which he tried you with.

We claim that we are your followers, believing in you, and  (believing and) bearing with everything that has been brought unto us by your father, and that which his successor brought unto us.

Therefore, we beg you (now that we believe) to make us join both of them so that we may rejoice at being purified for following you.

Peace be upon you O daughter of the Messenger of Allah; Peace be upon you O daughter of the beloved of Allah;

Peace be upon you O daughter of the friend of Allah;

Peace be upon you O daughter of the sincere friend of Allah;
